Website budgeting

What does a small business website cost?

By Don Hudson · COTC Web Studio

The useful question is not just “How much is a website?” It is “What does my business need the website to do?” Here is how I approach pricing at COTC Web Studio, so you can plan a realistic starting point.

Plan a website for your business

Start with the job your website needs to do

A local service business might need to explain its services and collect inquiries. A church might need worship times, directions, and event information. An app with accounts or a custom workflow is a different project. Write down the main action you want visitors to take before comparing quotes.

If you need one focused introduction and a contact form, a landing page may be enough. If visitors need separate explanations of several services, a business website gives those topics more room. A lower starting price is only useful if the scope covers what you actually need.

My starting prices and what they cover

At COTC Web Studio, a landing page starts at $350 USD. That includes one custom, mobile-friendly page, a contact form and social links, a page title and search description, and one round of revisions.

A business website starts at $750 USD for up to five custom pages, with services, about, and contact sections, mobile-friendly design, basic SEO, and two rounds of revisions. A custom web app starts at $1,500 USD, scoped around one core workflow. Features and integrations are quoted individually. These are my studio’s starting prices, rather than an estimate of what every developer charges.

What can change the quote?

More pages, new copy, additional revision rounds, and integrations can add work. For example, a link to an existing booking service and a custom booking system have different requirements. Describe the result you want and share the tools you already use so those differences can be included in the quote.

Before starting, we agree on the pages, content responsibilities, features, revisions, and price. If your needs change during the project, we discuss the extra scope and cost before proceeding.

Plan for costs after launch

Domain names, hosting, paid tools, and ongoing maintenance are separate from my website build prices. Ask who owns each account, who pays the renewal, and who handles updates. Keep a list of renewal dates so these costs are part of your budget.

My Website Care plan starts at $75 per month after a site review. Starter SEO Setup is a separate $150 one-time service for up to three existing pages. Neither is automatically included in a website build.

Bring these details to your first conversation

Send a short description of your business, your main visitor goal, the pages you think you need, and examples you like. Include your current website if you have one, your budget, and any deadline. That gives us a useful basis for a quote instead of guessing from a page count alone.

Let’s talk about your website.

Send your website address and business details, and tell me what you would like help with. We’ll confirm the fit, scope, and next steps before starting.
