Website maintenance

A practical website maintenance checklist.

A website needs attention after launch. I suggest starting with a simple monthly review of the information and actions your customers rely on, then adjusting the routine to your platform and how often your business changes.

Plan a website for your business

Check your business information

Read your contact details, opening hours, services, and prices. Remove expired promotions and check that seasonal information still applies. If your hours or services change between reviews, update those details when the change happens.

Make sure the same information appears wherever visitors may find it: your homepage, service pages, contact page, and footer. It is easy to correct a phone number in one place and overlook another.

Test the path to contacting you

Open your website as a customer would. Follow the main buttons, check phone and email links, and try your booking link if you have one. Send a clearly labeled test inquiry through the contact form and confirm that it reaches the intended inbox.

A success message on the page does not tell you whether someone on your team received the inquiry. Check delivery as well as the visible form behavior, and avoid including sensitive client information in a test.

Review the important pages on your phone

Check the homepage, your main service pages, and the contact page on a real phone. Open the navigation, read the text, and try the form. Look for clipped headings, overlapping buttons, images that fail to load, or content that requires sideways scrolling.

You do not need to redesign the site during each review. Record the page address and what went wrong so a fix can be scoped and checked afterward.

Review updates and backups for your platform

The maintenance work depends on how the website is built. A site with a content management system, plugins, and a database has different needs from a site made of static pages. Keep an inventory of the tools your site uses and confirm who is responsible for updates.

Before changing software, check the provider’s instructions and your recovery options. Where backups are supported, confirm what they contain, where they are stored, and how restoration works. A copy of the website files may not include form submissions or information stored in another service.

Keep a short maintenance record

Record what you checked, any changes made, unresolved issues, and upcoming domain or hosting renewals. Assign a person to each follow-up so a broken form does not become a forgotten note.

If you want help, my $75/month Website Care plan covers agreed monthly checks, a short report, and up to 30 minutes of edits using content you provide. Backups and updates depend on platform support and access. A site review comes first; larger repairs, hosting, and emergency support are outside this plan.

Let’s talk about your website.

Send your website address and business details, and tell me what you would like help with. We’ll confirm the fit, scope, and next steps before starting.
